Independent Testing Proves SunSense SPF Claims Are Accurate

Ego Pharmaceuticals has condemned claims by Choice that a SunSense product didn’t meet its SPF claims after independent retesting of the same batch of SunSense Sport SPF 50+ has returned results with an SPF greater than 60.

Immediate batch retesting was undertaken by an independent FDA accredited laboratory which provides reliable and consistent results. This testing confirms the original SPF testing certification for SunSense Sport SPF 50+.

The confirmation comes after a report from consumer advocacy group Choice claimed that recent testing of SunSense Sport SPF 50+ sunscreen was one of a number of products that did not deliver its stated label SPF values.

Ego Pharmaceuticals immediately sent the same batch to be independently tested upon receipt of the Choice SPF testing results, which returned an SPF greater than 60, both static and post immersion, which also supports its four hours water resistance claim (immersion was not tested by Choice).

Dr Kerryn Greive (PhD), Scientific Affairs Manager at Ego Pharmaceuticals states that, “this result unequivocally counteracts Choice’s recent claims. These independent results are consistent with the vast number of SPF tests that were conducted during product development”.

“We immediately sent samples from the same batch of product to an independent laboratory. This testing showed that the product achieves much higher values than SPF 50+. This is very strong evidence that re-enforces our confidence to stand by the quality and effectiveness of our product and absolutely reject Choice’s claims,” said Dr Greive.

Dr Greive says the company was concerned by Choice’s initial testing.

“Ego Pharmaceuticals manufacturing facility in Australia is licensed with all of our sunscreen manufacturing methods fully validated in compliance with the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This ensures the quality and reproducibility of our processes,” said Dr Greive.

Ego Pharmaceuticals stands by its claims and is currently investigating the purported abnormal results, which queries the Australian made, SunSense brand’s reputation.

“Australia has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the world and reports like this are concerning as it is very important that Australians aren’t discouraged from using sunscreen to protect against UV damage” added Dr Greive.

In Australia sunscreens are regulated as therapeutic products and are required to meet the Australian and New Zealand standard for sunscreen products. All SunSense products are made and tested in Australia according to strict regulations.
